âYOU START PISSINâ BLOOD, WEâLL HAUL YOU OVER TO SYDENHAM,â said Doc, âbut I think youâll be all right.â With a long wrap heâd mummified my abdomen to keep my ribs from floating free. âLucky he didnât just kill you.â
âFor what purpose?â
âFor the hell of it. Gimme a finger. I need fresh blood to do that test.â Compared to earlier pains his pinprick came as kiss. âThere. Didnât hurt a bit, did it?â
âThis demonstrates what?â I asked.
âLet me check it out first,â he said. âHowâre you going to get word to this fellow if heâs locked up?â
âI doubt heâs locked,â I said. âProbably has the kingâs ear in which to shoot lies and nonsense.â
âHe sounds like bad medicine to me,â said Doc, âand I ought to know. You donât think he was arrested for anything? I mean thereâs a lot they couldâve gotten you on if theyâd wanted toââ
âUnknown,â I said. Having bloodied a glass slide with my extract he lowered above it a clear square; pressed the two into one. âHis conditionâs unknown, his plotâs unknown. Allâs to be done is suspect.â
âYou all seem pretty good at that,â said Doc. âWhat if you canât get ahold of him anytime soon? Thought of that?â
âCertainly,â I said. âA slim option adheres that Oktobrianaâs associate is still viable. He possesses prime essential. If he is, however, heâs in Russia.â
Doc whistled, laying the slide onto a primitive microscopeâs rounded glass. âRussia. Damn.â My parents gave me such a beginnerâs model when I was nine, when they still hoped to later afford medical schoolâs unfunded costs. I used it once or twice, never adjusting to bloodâs sight until later, in different context. âTheyâve tightened up the borders there past few years. They say old Uncle Joeâs got something going on but nobody says what. Probably be easier getting in downtown. Sure be a helluva lot closer.â
âThree weeks ago he arrived here,â I said. âNever returned. Iâm doubtful he remains in existence.â
âMaybe heâs just lying low. Pays to over there, Iâd think,â said Doc. âYou know thereâll be Russian scientists in town all through the next week what with those goings-on at the fair. Maybe one of them knows something, ran into him or something.â
âDoubtful,â I said. âIf heâs present, heâs kept covered. Weâve no method of safe contact in any event.â
Doc cranked his scopeâs wheels, focusing. âRemember that fellow hollering in the window last night? He works out at the fair. Heâs a Red, too. He might be able to dig up some dirt over at the Soviet Pavilion. See if anybody admits to hearing anything. Canât hurt to ask.â
In some situations it killed to ask. Still, any straw was worth a snatch. âWe can contact soon?â I asked.
âHeâll be downstairs again tonight. Comes uptown everâ weekend. Rabble-rouses over on Lenox during the weekend, during the day, comes listening to jazz at night. Weâll go down there this evening and wait for him. Usually gets there around eight.â
âWhatâs his role at the fair?â
